We are just about halfway through the regular season in Oregon and several players have been making a name for themselves. Here are five players who deserve recognition for their impressive start to the season:

It’s impressive to see the growth that Holub has undergone since last season. While he’s always had the height advantage, I was hoping to see more physicality and toughness in his game. This year, he’s definitely delivered on that front. If you’ve watched any Valley Catholic games this season, you know that Holub is the one player who stands out. Not only is he the tallest on the field, but he’s also incredibly fast and agile. He plays both TE and LB for the Valiants, and he excels in both positions, showcasing impressive athleticism and physicality. It’s surprising to me that he hasn’t yet received any offers from FCS programs given his size and skills. While he may be a developmental player at the next level, he’s demonstrated a willingness to work hard and improve year after year.

Athan Palmateer

State: Oregon

School: South Salem

Athan is undoubtedly one of the top quarterbacks in the state, and his statistics prove it. He’s ranked top 5 in the state in both passing yards (1,228 yards) and passing touchdowns (14) after just four games. His return to South Salem after a year at Sprague seems to have been a wise decision for him and his future. While I was impressed with his junior season tape, his senior season has far exceeded my expectations. Athan is a quarterback who appears comfortable making any throw on the field, and with talented wide receivers like Eli Johnson Eli Johnson 6’4″ | 200 lbs | WR South Salem | 2024 State OR and Esteban Mendez Esteban Mendez 5’5″ | 145 lbs | ATH South Salem | 2024 State OR on his team, his performance is elevated even further. He has decent size and a great arm, and I expect his recruitment to pick up significantly after his impressive start to the season.

Danny Wideman

Wideman has been a standout player for the defending 6A state champions this season. He’s a remarkable athlete who plays both WR and kick returner. One thing that immediately stands out about Danny is his speed and explosiveness – he’s hard to miss when he’s on the field. His route running is precise and rapid, his release is nearly untouchable for high school defensive backs, and his ability to jump and catch the ball at his size is truly impressive. He’s an outstanding player who should garner plenty of interest from college recruiters heading into his senior year.

State: Oregon

School: Scappoose

Max is a true talent that only a select few have the privilege of witnessing in action. He plays at the 4A level for Scappoose and is a force to be reckoned with. Standing tall at 6’4, Max is a skilled pocket passer who exudes confidence on the field. Watching him play, one can’t help but feel impressed by how comfortable and composed he is. Playing in a system that emphasizes passing and spread-out formations, Max thrives under the guidance of a coach who trusts his abilities. He can efficiently complete quick passes over linebackers’ heads, thanks to his height. He is also a master at extending plays and rolling out when necessary. Max’s patience in the pocket is impressive, and he can precisely deliver darts all over the field. Unsurprisingly, he’s become one of the top QBs in Oregon, and he’s sure to attract interest soon from college recruiters.

Angel Valenzuela Angel Valenzuela 5'11" | 205 lbs | RB Mountain View | 2026 State OR

School: Mt View

Angel is a young football player whose talent has impressed me greatly. Many people may be unaware of his abilities, and I couldn’t wait to write about him. Angel has been a critical player for the undefeated Cougars in the season’s first four weeks. This is especially impressive, considering that the team is primarily made up of seniors. Angel is currently ranked in the top ten in the state for rushing yards and touchdowns scored. He has excellent patience as a runner for a sophom*ore and can break away from defenders with his speed and power. Lazy tackles are ineffective against him. Mountain View currently holds a 4-0 record and is ranked #4 in my 5A rankings, and much of their success is due to the contributions of this talented sophom*ore. If all goes according to plan, he should be a household name in Oregon high school football by his senior season.
