A tragic incident unfolded as a man was struck by lightning while collecting kaffir lime leaves for cooking, resulting in his death in front of his father.

The incident occurred at 6.30pm yesterday, April 22, when Police Captain Boonlert Raktong, an investigator from Mueang Amnat Charoen Police Station, received a report of the lightning strike fatality in a paddy field in Ban Khok Khai, Village 5, Kaikham subdistrict, Mueang district, Amnat Charoen province.

Upon arriving at the scene, a paddy field used for growing vegetables, the police discovered the body of a man lying face down near a kaffir lime tree with leaves covering parts of his body.

The deceased was identified as 44 year old Sommai Jarujit, who had burn marks on his body, suggesting he had died due to a lightning strike. The family did not question the cause of death, and the body was taken for religious ceremonies.

Saiwai Jarujit, the father of the deceased, recounted that after completing their farming chores, his son went to collect kaffir lime leaves to use for their evening meal. At that time, dark rain clouds gathered, accompanied by thunder, reported KhaoSod.

Shortly after, a lightning bolt struck, and when he turned around, he saw his son collapse instantly. Despite his attempts to offer assistance, it was too late; his son had already passed away.

In similar news, a deadly lightning strike at a cassava plantation in Huai Yai, Bang Lamung district, Chon Buri province, resulted in one fatality and left another person seriously injured on September 26 last year.

The incident occurred around 1pm near the Huai Yai Municipality Fire Station. Police Lieutenant Ruangsak Siribut, Deputy Chief of Investigation at Huai Yai Police Station, received the emergency report and quickly responded to the scene. He was accompanied by rescue personnel from the Sawang Boriboon Foundation in Pattaya.
