Ursprung des Landesnamens – Origin of the Country's Name:

Der Name des Landes geht auf die größte Insel des Archipels zurück. Von hier aus eroberte König Kamehameha I. mit Hilfe Großbritanniens bis 1810 alle anderen Inseln der Inselgruppe und übertrug so den Namen seines Insel-Königreichs auf das gesamte Archipel. Die Insel Hawaii ist die größte der Inseln im Archipel. Sie wird auch "Owyhee" oder auch "Big Island" genannt. In den polynesischen Sprachen bedeuten die Worte Hawaiʻi oder auch Havaiki "Stammsitz der Ahnen". Angeblich hat das Wort in der polynesischen Sprache der Hawaii-Inseln jedoch keine Bedeutung (mehr). Als James Cook im Jahre 1778 den Archipel entdeckte, tauft die ganze Inselgruppe der heutigen Hawaii-Inseln "Sandwichinseln", nach John Montagu, 4. Earl of Sandwich, dem Lord der britischen Admiralität. The name of the country goes back to the largest island of the archipelago. From here, King Kamehameha I. conquered all the other islands of the island group with the help of United Kingdom until 1810, and thus the name of his island kingdom became transferred to the entire archipelago. In the Polynesian languages, the words Hawai'i or Havaiki mean "seat of the ancestors". However, the word has in the Polynesian language of the Hawaiian Islands no meaning (anymore). When James Cook discovered the archipelago in 1778, he named the entire island group of the today's Hawaiian Islands "Sandwich Islands", according to John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, the Lord of the British admiralty.
