This list of best free things to do in Charleston SC will be broken up into categories. You will see that many of the items here can be put together in a group. Plenty of these locations in Charleston do require a lot of walking. So please wear comfortable shoes.
Best free things to do outside in Charleston SC
Charleston is an amazing outdoor city. Being in the south and on the ocean makes this city ideal for doing as much as you can outside. There are so many things to see and do while walking around Charleston. That is why I am starting out with the best free things to do in Charleston SC listed here.
And Charleston knows how to take advantage of where it is located with a lot of activities to do outside. With being one of the oldest cities in The United States, there is plenty to see all around The Holy City.
1. Walk the Ravenel Bridge
The Ravenel Bridge is one of the most iconic structures in Charleston. It spans the water where the Cooper River and Wando River join together and pour into the harbor of Charleston.
The Arthur Ravenel Jr Bridge stands at 573 ft tall and its total length is 13,123 ft. It is almost impossible to not see the bridge where ever you are in the city.
You will see many people every day walking, running, or biking across the bridge. Every year there is a major bridge run that happens here, The Cooper River Bridger Run. Once on top, you will get the best views of the city, sunrises, and sunsets.
2. The Charleston Farmers Market
The Charleston Farmers Market takes place in Marion Square in the heart of downtown Charleston. Charleston Farmers Market is filled locally by Lowcountry farmers, and you can buy from locally owned businesses that have prepared/packaged food.
You will see artisans, crafters, and live performers with community groups and activities. The variety of local produce, plants, herbs, and local breakfast and lunch vendors will help you fall in love with Charleston.
The farmers market does only take place from March through November on Saturdays from 8 am to 2 pm. This is a perfect place to get a glimpse of the love that Charlestonians have for their city and people.
3. The Angel Oak Tree
The Angel Oak Tree is located at 3688 Angel Oak Rd., Johns Island, SC. It is a short drive from downtown Charleston to get to it. No picture does the tree justice. It is one of those things that you have to see in person. And when you do, you will agree that it should be on this list of best free things to do in Charleston SC.
It is a Southern live oak tree that is estimated to be between 400-500 years old. That makes it the oldest living tree east of the Mississippi River. The tree stands over 65ft tall and has a circumference of 28ft. This is an impressive tree to take a picture of.
You will see how the limbs are so heavy that they fall to the ground, grow through the ground, and come back through. I have never seen a tree like this in my life. Trust me, you just have to see it to understand.
4. Charleston Tea Plantation
Charleston Tea Plantation now known as Charleston Tea Garden is located about 20 minutes south of Charleston on Wadmalaw Island. This is not a standard historical plantation, but a newer one. No slaves ever worked at this plantation.
The Tea bushes were first brought to the United States in the late 1700s from China. It took many attempts for the tea to take hold in South Carolina. Roughly around 150 years. It wasn’t until 1888 when Dr. Charles Shepard founded the Pinehurst Tea Plantation in Summerville, South Carolina that the reality of growing and producing tea in America came true. After his death in 1915, the plantation closed and his tea plants grew wild for 45 years.
In 1987, William Barclay Hall purchased the land. At this point, The Charleston Tea Plantation was founded. During this time, his original “American Classic” tea became the first true tea to be grown in The United States.
In 2003, there was a partnership between William Barclay Hall and The Bigelow Family. The Bigelow Family purchased the garden and brought years of experience to the plantation. In 2020, The Charleston Tea Plantation changed its name to The Charleston Tea Garden.
Enjoy wandering around the grounds, taking in the sights of the garden, photos of all you want, and learning all about tea. This is a perfect, relaxing afternoon that is a must-see.
5. Charles Pinckney Historical Site
The Charles Pinckney Historical Site is located in Mt. Pleasant on Long Point Rd close to Boone Hall Plantation. This site is part of the United States National Park Service, which is preserving a part of Charles Pinckney’s Snee Farm Plantation.
Charles Pinckney is a forgotten founding father throughout the country. He was one of three men to sign the Constitution of The United States from South Carolina. Charles Pinckney had a strong voice in forming the nation that we have today. He was a strong believer in the separation of church and state. He served the city of Charleston, the state of South Carolina, and The United States for over 40 years.
The site sits on 25 acres of land at the confluence of the Wando River and Cooper River. It has wooded and swampy areas on the eastern and western portions of the site. The site holds the main house, corn crib, a barn, and a caretaker’s house. The land was acquired by Charles’ father and was developed as Snee Farm as a rice and indigo plantation.
6. Charleston City Market
The Charleston City Market is located on Market St between Meeting St and East Bay St. This spot is probably the most popular tourist spot in Charleston. It spans about 4 blocks with tons of stands and shops inside. About 1/3 of it is inside with some food stands. Charleston City Market sits in the heart of the historic downtown. With being as popular as it is, I had to put this on my best free things to do in Charleston list.
Today you will find all kinds of souvenirs of Charleston in the stalls. Along with seeing traditional Sweet Grass baskets being made by the Gullah Basket Vendors. On each side of The Market, you will find shops lining Market St. Take some time to window-shop and stop in to check out a few different shops. Enjoy places like Pepper Palace, a hot sauce store, or Beef Jerky Experience.
Since 1692, the market was used as a city market to sell different meats and food supplies to the citizens of Charlestowne. A strip of marshland was donated to the area. This allowed the market to stretch from the docks of Charleston Harbor all the way to Meeting St. The market was also used as a city center for the lower and middle-class residents to gather to play games and drink.
7. College of Charleston
College of Charleston sits in the heart of Charleston. What a great place to go to college, right? This campus is absolutely beautiful. The grounds are mixed in with historic and newer buildings. Make sure to stop by the Mace Brown Museum of Natural History which is on this list.
Make sure to spend time walking through the campus to take in all of its beauty. Stop by the Cistern to see one of the best spots at the college to see where graduation takes place every year. Travel + Leisure magazine named the College of Charleston “America’s Most Beautiful College Campus” in 2017. Once you walk around the campus, you will agree that this is one of the best free things to do in Charleston SC.
The college itself was founded in 1770 and is the oldest college in South Carolina. 3 of the founders of the College of Charleston signed the Declaration of Independence and 3 signed the United States Constitution.
8. Pitt Street Bridge
During colonial Charleston, a plank bridge, built on barrels, was erected across this inlet to connect Mt. Pleasant to Sullivan’s Island. In 1898, it changed into a trolley bridge that ran until 1927. The bridge was widened in 1923 to allow automobiles to cross. The Pitt Street Bridge closed in 1945 when a modern bridge was built, the Ben Sawyer Bridge.
Today the area is a recreational park. You will find Palmetto trees lining the walk out to the bridge. The bridge itself is just under a quarter-mile long. Pitt Street Bridge is a very dog-friendly park, you will see people walking their dogs down the path to the bridge. You will also see lots of people fishing off of the bridge.
As you walk down the Pitt Street Bridge, there are amazing views of downtown Charleston, Sullivan’s Island, the waterway, marsh, birds, and fish. The smell of salt in the air makes you want to sit down, take in the view, and just get lost in your day. This spot is probably one of the best places to see a sunset in Charleston.
9. Rainbow Row
Rainbow Row is one of the most picturesque spots in Charleston. The amazing pastel color houses make the perfect background for all your memorable photos. Don’t be surprised if you see wedding parties taking pictures here.
Rainbow Row is located between 83-107 East Bay St. It took its look in 1931 when Dorthy Porcher Legge and her husband purchased a house and painted it pastel pink. Soon the neighbors followed and painted theirs around its pastel colors.
There are many theories as to why houses are painted these colors that date back to before the purchase in 1931. A few of the theories include, that the house was painted this way to help drunk sailors find their way home. These houses were painted this way to keep them cooler during the hot Charleston summers. The colors were to signify to boats and sailors that Charleston was not a pirate port. The fact is that there is a strong history of pirates in Charleston.
Whichever the real reason is, we can all agree that this spot is truly a treasure spot in Charleston. With Rainbow Row being one of Charleston’s more iconic spots, you can see why it is part of the best free things to do in Charleston SC.
10. Morris Island Lighthouse
Morris Island Lighthouse is located at the northeast end of Folly Beach. The lighthouse stands on a small island in the water and is just a couple of hundred feet off of the coast. It has become a major landmark for Charleston.
The brick tower was built in 1767 by the Colony of South Carolina. On May 7th, 1800, Congress granted $5,000 to repair the structure and add improvements. In 1838, the tower stood 102ft tall with there being a revolving light at the top. During the Civil War, The Confederacy took over the lighthouse. In 1862 the tower was reported to be destroyed. During Reconstruction, Congress gave another grant to rebuild the lighthouse on March 3, 1873
The new lighthouse stands 161ft tall and was completed in 1876. Things were going very well until the mid-1880s came around. 1885 and 1886 were hard years for the lighthouse. In 1885, a cyclone tore apart parts of the tower and grounds. Then, the earthquake of 1886 did extensive damage to the tower itself. But, the lighthouse persevered.
The lighthouse, originally constructed in 1767, stood 1200ft from the coast. In 1889, jetties were built to protect shipping lanes. Because of this, ocean currents coming into Charleston Harbor altered. By 1938, major erosion moved the shoreline within a stone’s throw of the lighthouse. Because of this, the lighthouse was decommissioned in 1962.
Walking through the area to get to the lighthouse, you will notice a long blacktop walkway that is filled with graffiti. The graffiti is done by local artists and visitors to the area. The ever-changing artwork is always spectacular to see.
11. Botany Bay
Only a short hour to an hour and a half drive away, there is a hidden gem, Botany Bay. First, you will want to take Highway 17 toward Savannah, GA. Then after a little bit of time, you will get off and head towards Edisto Island, SC. This is a quiet country drive through rural South Carolina.
This place has walking trails, a great driving trail, and the most beautiful beach in the Lowcountry. In the past, this land was home to two different plantations. Created in the 1930s Botany Bay was two properties that were purchased together.
When you enter the preserve, grab a map of the area with a great overview of the history. This is definitely one of my favorite places. You feel like you are stepping into the past when you are here. There is Spanish moss hanging from trees, fresh ponds with wildlife, and the original foundations of the plantation houses. The smell of the wildflower fields and salt in the air takes you to a special place. You can see why it was home to Native Americans and why settlers wanted to settle here.
After a short walk, you get to one of the greatest things you will see, a true untouched beach. A couple of things that you will notice immediately are shells, lots of shells, and downed trees scattered along the beach.
Do not forget your camera! There are so many opportunities for a photoshoot here. One thing I love about this place is that every time you come out, it looks slightly different. The reason is because of the natural evolution of this place. Nature decides everything! 12. Gateway Walk
The Gateway Walk is an outside walking trail that goes through many of the cemeteries of Charleston. Though this path has been around since 1930, it is a hidden gem that many people do not know. Opened by The Garden Club of Charleston, it was to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the founding of Charles Towne.
The Gateway walk begins on Archdale St at the gates of St. John’s Lutheran Church. It is a beautiful walk through graveyards, gardens, and churches. The walk ends at St. Phillips Church on Church St. You will find yourself walking through sections of iron gates, hence the name.
The walk itself is not too long, a little over half a mile. I recommend taking your time and exploring every area you get to see. Make sure you download the map from the website to know exactly where you are going.
The cemeteries of Charleston can be very beautiful with how they are taken care of. Enjoy looking at many of the grave sites to find some of not just Charleston’s historical figures, but of The United States. If a gate is not open to walk through, you are able to easily find the other side to continue your journey. There is so much to explore on this walk making this easily one of the best free things to do in Charleston SC.
13. Philadelphia Alley
You can find Philadelphia Alley located between Queen St and Cumberland St and State St and Church St. The alley is also known as Dueler’s Alley for the history of duels that took place here.
Though the alley is not really long, it has a lot of history to it. The alley was created in 1776 when it was created by Francis Kinloch by having a row of rentals behind his home. It was known as Kinloch’s Court at this time. The Court and area were destroyed in 1796 by the famous fire.
A Revolutionary War Veteran, named William Johnson purchased the court in 1801. Though he owned the area, it was in very poor condition and was neglected. Then things got worse when it burned again in 1810.
The city of Philadelphia sent financial aid to help the city. The street reopened and William Johnson renamed it to Philadelphia Alley to honor the city’s help.
Dueling was a common practice at this time. The most famous duel in Charleston happened in this alley in 1786 when Dr. Joseph Brown Ladd lost a duel to Ralph Isaac. Ladd was known as The Whistling Doctor and some say they can still hear him whistling in the alley.
Today Philadelphia Alley is a beautiful, picturesque lane. Enjoy the sounds of Charleston while taking in one of the best free things to do in Charleston SC.
14. Magnolia Cemetery
Magnolia Cemetery is located in the northern part of downtown Charleston. It is a historic rural cemetery that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The cemetery was constructed in 1850 and is on a plot of land that was known as Magnolia Umbra Plantation.
There is a section of the cemetery that holds Confederate soldiers that were killed in the Civil War. Also, a major section holds the crew that was lost that served on the Hunley. The Hunley was the first submarine to successfully attack and sink an opposing ship, USS Housatonic. When the attack happened, both the ship and submarine perished.
When the Hunley was recovered in 2000, the remains of the crew were inside. The remains of the soldiers were laid to rest in 2004 in Magnolia Cemetery.
Magnolia Cemetery looks like it is right out of a movie. There are large crypts, mausoleums, and even a pyramid on the grounds. Take your time to stroll around the grounds. This cemetery is completely unique with all the statues and grave sites.
Best parks to visit in Charleston SC
Charleston has many great open areas to relax and spend time in. The parks in Charleston are mostly spacious and are usually dedicated to someone from the city’s past. You will find that the city takes pride in keeping the parks looking great.
You will see why all these parks are on my best free things to do in Charleston SC list after you visit them. Take your time to take in all features of each park. There are so many hidden treasures in each one.
15. Joe Riley Waterfront Park
As the name suggests,Joe Riley Waterfront Park sits on the water in downtown Charleston. This is one of the most picturesque places in Charleston. You can find the park at the corners of Concord St and Vendue Range.
There are plenty of places to sit and relax. There are two great fountains in the park. One you will see will almost always have children playing it. It is a great way for the kids to cool down on a hot Charleston day.
The second is Charleston’s famous Pineapple Fountain. You can not come to Charleston and not get a picture in front of it. This is a beautiful park to walk and take in the sites along the water in downtown Charleston.
This park is one of the more popular spots in Charleston to visit. You will easily be able to see what this is one of the best free things to do in Charleston SC. There are so many great views from this park.
16. Riverfront Park in North Charleston
Riverfront Park in North Charleston sits along the Cooper River. The park is part of Noisette which was the home to the old Naval Base and the officers’ houses. Walking the streets around the park and looking at the houses is a great way to spend the afternoon.
The park is home to the Charleston Naval Base Memorial. It hosts plenty of art sculptures, grand oaks, and a pavilion. This is one of my favorite places to take a walk in the entire city.
17. The Battery and White Point Garden
Walking all the way down East Bay St. you will get to The Battery. Here you will be on the edge of the water on one side and on the other some of the most amazing houses. This is a great place to take a stroll and clear your head. While taking in the view of the houses and water, you will understand why this is a top thing to do in Charleston SC.
At the point of the peninsula, you will run into White Point Garden. Take some time to walk around the park looking at the statues and enjoying the breeze off the water. Many people believe this is the site for one of the locations of the 12 treasures from the book,The Secret: A Treasure Hunt.
The Battery was first used as the defense of Charleston from incoming water invasions. After military advances, the seawall remained and was improved to help protect Charleston from tidal sea levels and storm surges.
18. Washington Square Park
Washington Square Park is located right behind City Hall just off of Broad St. This is a small but beautiful park with azaleas and oak trees covered in Spanish moss. Benches can be found all over the park with large brick walkways that lead to a number of statues.
In the center of the park, a statue that is a miniature version of the Washington Monument pays tribute to the Washington Light Infantry. Along the east wall, there is a statue of General Pierre Beauregard. He was a Confederate General and led the city’s defenses during the beginning years of The Civil War. There is a statue of George Washington in the park that is named in his honor in 1881.
This park is one of the first public parks in Charleston. Originally the park was home to Corbett’s Thatched Tavern. After which, it was used as a public gathering space and official city square in 1818.
19. Memorial Waterfront Park
Memorial Waterfront Park sits under the Ravenel Bridge on the Mt. Pleasant side. The park hosts a playground, café, gift shop, and a 1250-foot pier that goes out into Charleston Harbor. There is an 8,100 ft pavilion that hosts events and dances throughout the year.
This is a great park to relax in and take amazing photos along the water’s edge. You will get to see The Ravenel Bridge from underneath and be amazed by its sheer size.
20. Hampton Park
Hampton Park lies by The Citadel in Charleston. It is a 60-acre public park and the largest on the peninsula. Originally the land was part of a plantation owned by John Gibbes. The plantation was known by two names, The Grove Plantation or The Orange Grove Plantation.
In 1835, part of the plantation was purchased by the South Carolina Jockey Club for horse racing. The Charleston annual horse race in February would attract thousands of spectators. Mary Murry Dr, which encircles the park, is a 1-mile parkway that is in almost the exact location of the horse track.
The land was used as a prisoner-of-war camp during the end of the Civil War. Over 200 Union troops died and were buried in a mass grave at the site. On May 1, 1865, thousands of people, mostly newly freed black citizens, were processed to the site. Members of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry marched around the site. The graves were decorated and speeches were made. This has been cited as the first Memorial Day celebration.
21. Shem Creek Park
Shem Creek Park is located in Mount Pleasant on Shem Creek. The park features a 2,200 ft boardwalk that goes from Coleman BLVD to the mouth of the creek. At the end, you will have a spectacular view of the bay of Charleston.
While walking the boardwalk, you will be able to see shrimping boats. Once out on the boardwalk, you will be able to see Ft. Sumter and Castle Pinckney.
Shem Creek Park sits right next to one of the best areas of waterfront restaurants that Mount Pleasant has. Take some time to check them out and have dinner.
Best beaches to go to in Charleston SC
Some of the best places on earth are where the ocean meets the land. The beach is an escape for just about anyone. And Charleston’s beaches are no different. Charleston has three great beaches that are relatively close to downtown.
I recommend if you decide to head out to any of the beaches, get up early and try to beat the traffic. The beaches are prime for everyone trying to escape the southern heat. What better way to spend a free day than spending time in the surf and catching some sun. You will see that these beaches are one of the best free things to do in Charleston SC.
A fair warning to everyone, beaches and drinking go hand-and-hand. South Carolina public beaches prohibit alcoholic beverages and glass bottles on the beach. Trying to save you from getting a ticket. Use your best judgment.
22. Folly Beach
This is Charleston’s most popular beach destination. Folly Beach is located on the western side of the city just past James Island. When you arrive at Folly Beach, you will notice that it is alive. There is so much going on here from all the different restaurants, shops, and hotels. There are going to be lots of people walking around having a great time.
At the northeastern point of Folly Beach, you will run into Morris Island Lighthouse. Take some time to check it out. We will talk more about that in a little bit.
You will find that Folly Beach will have the most beachgoers enjoying the beach. Select your spot and enjoy your time in the sun.
23. Isle of Palms
Isle of Palms is a great beach. To get there, you will have to travel through Mount Pleasant, which is on the eastern side of Charleston. Once you are on the Isle of Palm Connector, you will quickly see beautiful marshes. The Isle of Palms Connector will take you over the Intercostal Waterway, at which you will get one of the most beautiful sights ever. Just the ocean and the vast openness of the sea.
If you are lucky, you might be able to see Sea Turtle Nesting. Because of the Sea Turtle, make sure to turn off all lights at midnight if you are taking a nightly stroll.
Enjoy your walk around the area looking at the shops and restaurants. Walking the beach is a great passing of time and a perfect way to people-watch. Laying on the sand and forgetting about the worries of the world is a great thing to do as well on Isle of Palms.
24. Sullivan’s Island
Located just southwest of Isle of Palms is Sullivan’s Island. When you get here, you feel like you are in a whole different town. It feels just separated enough from everything. You will see that you can easily spend a whole day here.
It feels like the beach isn’t as packed here as the other two. You will enjoy the quietness while laying out and taking in the sun. A little secret, this is more so where the locals go. But don’t tell anyone I told you that.
I highly recommend taking some time to drive around and just look at the houses. Take some time to check out Ft. Moultrie while here. Ft. Moultrie is one of the most historic places in Charleston.
From just about anywhere on the beach, you will get a great view of Charleston and Ft Sumter in the bay. Sullivan’s Island beach is one of my little escapes from reality.
Best churches to visit in Charleston SC
Charleston is known as The Holy City and you can see why by looking at the skyline. Pelted with church steeples, Charleston’s skyline is iconic. There are over 400 total church steeples in Charleston.
My list here of the best free things to do in Charleston SC only includes some historic churches in the historic downtown Charleston area. There are so many more churches to explore in Charleston.
25. Circular Congregational Church
The Circular Congregational Church is located at 150 Meeting St and is a historic church. The church was founded in 1681 and is one of the oldest continuously worshiping congregations in the southern part of The United States.
This church started to be built in 1890 and the current church is in the Romanesque style. This style is very different from any traditional Charleston architecture at the time. The Congregational Church combines the circle, which is the exterior plan, and the Greek Cross, which is the interior plan.
The circular part is resembling the former church that stood before the Civil War. It is a universal symbol of eternity and wholeness. The Greek Cross is the Christian symbol of death and resurrection.
Its graveyard is one of the oldest graveyards in Charleston and probably the oldest English burial ground in Charleston. The earliest unmarked grave is from 1695 with the earliest inscribed being 1729.
26. The Unitarian Church
The Unitarian Church is located in the historic district at 4 Archdale St. This church is the oldest Unitarian church in the south and the oldest church building on the Charleston peninsula. The church was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1976.
The Unitarian Church was completed in 1787. It was almost finished in 1776 when the Revolutionary War began but was put on hold. The entire top of the church was destroyed in 1886 by an earthquake. It was shortly restored to its look after the disaster.
The graveyard has a unique look and style. You will see that the paths are taken care of but the overgrowth of vines, shrubs, and trees is evident throughout the cemetery. The belief is that this is how the dead would want it, giving back to nature and letting it grow naturally. This look makes The Unitarian Church a unique visit and a beautiful one. The graveyard is part of the Charleston Gateway walk as well.
27. Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist
The Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist is located on Broad St and is the mother church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charleston. The church opened in 1907 and was designed in the Gothic Revival style.
Stained-glass windows by Franz Mayer & CO, neo-gothic architecture, and hand-painted Station of the Cross makes this church well known. There is a crypt in the lower section which holds Bishop England and four other Charleston bishops. Because of the lack of funding, the church’s spire was not completed. In 2010 the steeple and bells were finally built and put in to complete the church’s construction.
There are 4 chapels within The Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist. Sacred Heart, Blessed Virgin Mary, Our Lady of Grace, and Saint John the Baptist Crypt Chapel. This is a beautiful church to see and spend some time enjoying the creative artwork.
28. The French Huguenot Church
The French Huguenot Church, also known as The French Protestant Church, is a Gothic Revival church located on Church St in historic downtown Charleston. The church was built in 1844, but the congregation traces its origins back to the 1680s. This church is actually the only independent Huguenot church in The United States.
The French Huguenot Church has been designated a National Historic Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This is a true beauty to see in Charleston.
The first thing that will stand out to you is that the church is pink. It is a stuccoed brink building with three bays of wide and six bays long. Each bay is divided by buttresses topped by elaborate pinnacles.
29. St. Phillips Church
St. Phillips Church is a National Historic Landmark that is located on Church St. This is arguably the most recognizable church in Charleston. The Church was built in 1835-1836 and opened in 1836. St. Phillips Church features an imposing tower that was designed in the Wren-Gibbs tradition.
St. Phillip’s is the oldest European-American religious congregation in South Carolina which established itself in 1681. The tower was used as the rear tower of range lighthouses that served to guide sailors into Charleston’s harbor. The front of the towers was stationed on Ft. Sumter.
The graveyard hosts a few famous American founding fathers, John C. Calhoun (the seventh vice-president of The United States), Charles Pinckney (US Senator, Governor of South Carolina, and Signer of The United States Constitution), and Edward Rutledge (Continental Congressman and Signer of The United States Declaration of Independence and Continental Association).
Take some time to walk around the cemetery to view some of the amazing figures that shaped The United States. The cemetery itself is a well-maintained and beautiful place. It is also part of the Gateway Walk in Charleston.
30. St. Michael’s Church
St. Michael’s Episcopal Church is located at the corner of Meeting St and Broad St at what is known as the Four Corners of Law. The church was built in the 1750s by the order of the South Carolina Assembly and is the oldest religious structure in Charleston. This church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a National Historic Landmark.
St Michael’s Church was originally affiliated with the Church of England but following the American Revolution, the church became an Episcopal Church. In fact, during his visit to Charleston, President George Washington sat and worshiped in pew no. 43.
The church has a two-story portico that faces Meeting St and was the first building in Colonial America to have one this large. Inside there are beautiful pieces of stained-glass windows to admire.
St. Michael’s Churchyard, also its graveyard, is the resting place of two signers of The United States Constitution, Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, and John Rutledge. It is truly amazing to be in a spot that holds so much pivotal history.
Best historical streets to walk in Charleston SC
People visit Charleston all the time and just love to walk the streets downtown. Whenever I ask someone what they like about Charleston, I get the same answer, “Just walking around the beautiful streets and getting lost”. This is why I had to add this to my best free things to do in Charleston SC list.
Charleston has some of the most beautiful streets in The United States. There are plenty of streets still made out of cobblestone. It is great to walk the same streets that the colonialists walked that helped shaped this country.
The peninsula is only so big, so it makes walking and seeing the city great. Because of its size, it is easy to get around. Whether you are shopping or walking down residential streets, Charleston is a great walking city.
31. East Bay Street
East Bay Street is a delight if you like to take photos. It is one of the more popular and visited streets in Charleston. East Bay Street can easily be broken down into two sections in the downtown area.
The first section runs from Charleston City Market at Market Street to Broad Street. In this section, you will find many amazing restaurants that Charleston has to offer. Restaurants such as Magnolias, Carmella’s Café and Dessert Bar, and Slightly North of Broad (SNOB). This is a street where you will want to try every restaurant.
The second section runs from Broad Street all the way to The Battery. This is where you will want to have your camera ready. This section of the street contains Rainbow Row, The Battery, White Point Garden, and all the amazing, huge houses along The Battery. The second section of Meeting Street is one of the best walking sections in the entire city.
You will be walking right by the water for half of this section. On one side you are all the stunning mansions. On the other side, you will be seeing the harbor with boats and Ft Sumter.
32. Meeting Street
Meeting Street runs through the entire peninsula of Charleston. For this street, we are going to talk about the section that runs from Calhoun Street to where it ends at White Point Garden.
Meeting Street is one of the streets in Charleston and one of the most historical streets too. When Charleston was a walled city, Meeting Street was the western boundary with the entrance being at Broad Street and Meeting Street.
On this street, you will see plenty of restaurants, shops, museums, and amazing houses. Some of the houses on Meeting Street were the homes of some significant historic figures, like John Calhoun. Meeting Street is always the start of The Charleston City Market as the corner of Meeting Street and Market Street.
One of the more significant spots and landmarks in the city is The Four Corners of Law. It is at the intersection of Meeting Street and Broad Street that makes this up. Here you will find The Courthouse, St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, The Post Office, and City Hall. There is so much to explore on this street, take your time and have fun.
33. King Street
King Street is one of, if not, the most popular street in Charleston. This street stretches the entire length of the peninsula. King Street changes its tune as you travel through Charleston. I like to break it up into 4 different sections.
The first section runs from about Spring Street to Calhoun Street. In this section, you will find mostly some of the best restaurants that Charleston has to offer. Along with the restaurants, you will find a lot of bars as well. On the weekends this area will be full of tourists, bachelor, bachelorette, and college students have a great time.
I like the call the next section, the college area. It only runs for a couple of blocks past Calhoun Street. Here you will notice a strong influence of college students since the College of Charleston is right in this section.
The third section runs from the college area all the way to Broad Street. Here you will find our shopping district. King Street has been named one of the nation’s top-10 shopping streets by U.S. News and World Report. Among the amazing stores and shops, you will also find many antique shops mixed in. The blend of the stores and shops truly makes a unique shopping experience in Charleston.
After Broad Street to the water at White Point Garden, you will have the residential area of King Street. Here you will find many beautiful homes. Walking this section just looking at the houses and gardens is a lot of fun.
34. Queen Street
Queen Street is not as long a street as most of these are. The street runs from East Bay Street to Rutledge Ave at Colonial Lake. Queen Street is a great street with many houses to look at and a restaurant lover’s dream.
While walking down Queen Street you will run into many amazing and beautiful houses in the heart of historic downtown Charleston. Walking down Queen Street you will also run into Philadelphia Alley, which we talked about earlier. Take some time to explore this beautiful alley.
At the corner of Queen Street and Church Street, you will get to check two amazing buildings. One is Dock Street Theater, which is the oldest theater in The United States. The other is The French Huguenot Church, which is the only independently run Huguenot church in The United States.
In between Meeting Street and King Street, you will run into the 3 amazing restaurants. Husk, Queen 82, and Poogan’s Porch are all amazing and award-winning restaurants.
Take your walk all the way to the end and enjoy the amazing houses, garden area, and “lake” that is Colonial Lake. It is one of my favorite places to relax and just take in the Charleston area. It is off of the historic downtown area, so there will be fewer people.
35. Broad Street
Broad Street crosses the entire peninsula closer to the tip. It was once one of the walls of the city when Charleston was a walled city. The street runs all the way into East Bay Street. At the end, you will run into the Old Exchange/Provost Dungeon.
Broad Street holds some restaurants and bars. The majority of this street is in the art gallery district where you will be able to see a lot of Charleston’s fine art.
On the corners of Meeting Street and Broad Street, you will run into the Four Corners of Law. You will see Charleston City Hall, St. Michael’s Church, The Post Office, and The Court House. The Post Office holds a museum in it for the history of The Post Office.
Broad Street is home to the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist as well. Take some time to go in and explore the church. Right next to the church is the John Rutledge House Inn. This is a great place to take a few pictures with its architecture. The iron bars are a work of art.
I suggest that you walk further down to Colonial Lake. Here there will be many beautiful houses with the classic Georgian Style that Charleston is known for.
36. Chalmers Street
Chalmers Street is one of the few remaining cobblestone streets left in Charleston. I am recommending walking this. Do not drive it. It is not fun to drive a car on the old cobblestone. This street is only 2 blocks long.
Now, this street is just pretty. You will probably see wedding parties taking pictures while standing in the street because of the awesome colors of the houses and cobblestone. You can also get some great pictures coming off of Washington Park which connects with Chalmers Street.
One thing that makes this street historic is the Old Slave Mart. This is a place in Charleston’s dark history where slaves were sold and traded. The Old Slave Mart is run by descendants of slaves today and takes pride in educating the history of slavery in Charleston.
37. Church Street
Church Street runs basically from The Charleston City Market all the wait to White Point Garden. The couple blocks around The Charleston City Market on Church Street are the most vibrant and alive sections in Charleston. This is in the heart of the historic downtown and the tourist area.
While in The Market area, you will see restaurants, shops, and The Charleston City Market. After you pass Cumberland Street, you will run into where Church Street gets its name, St. Phillip’s Church. You will be able to visit the church and the graveyards attached to it. A half a block away you will run into Dock Street Theater and The French Huguenot Church again.
Once you get past Broad Street, Church Street turns into a heavily residential road. The houses here are amazing. You will find that they are all on old winding roads that are narrow. You can tell that this is where the colonialist started to build houses to expand the city. This expansion happened after the walled part of the city was changed.
38. Legare Street
The first thing I want to tell you about this street is that it is pronounced, “la gree”. Native Charlestonians are very big about the pronunciation of this street. Legare Street is not a long street. It runs from Queen Street to South Battery Street.
This street is mostly residential. You will see beautiful houses and gardens along with way. People who live on Legare Street take pride in how their houses and yards look. It is definitely worth walking down this street to get some great photos.
39. Tradd Street
Tradd Street runs basically across the entire peninsula like Broad Street does, only a bit more south. This street is a lot like Legare Street which is mostly residential.
It is easy to get lost in the look of the houses while you walk this street. This street gives you the complete old, historic Charleston look and feels while walking among the houses and gardens. Your mind will transport you back in time when colonialists were walking on this road.
Enjoy the look of the old-world shutters, the flickering of carriage lanterns, and the color of the houses. Take a peek at the gardens throughout the yards of these houses. If you want a chance to get great Charleston photos without the people around, this is the perfect street for you.

40. Mace Brown Museum of Natural History
The Mace Brown Museum of Natural History is in the heart of the College of Charleston at the corner of Calhoun St and Coming St. The museum has on display almost 1,000 fossils.
At the Mace Brown Museum of Natural History, you will see dinosaur bones, cave bears, and mosasaurs. Along with Oligocene mammals of North America and Pleistocene mammals of the Carolinas. One of the more popular exhibits is the reconstructed jaw of a Megalodon which has real teeth from one.

41. Fort Sumter Visitor Education Center
Fort Sumter Visitor Education Center is located in Liberty Square just off of Concord Street. Ft Sumter is such an important part of United States history. The fort itself is located in the harbor of Charleston.
On the morning of April 12, 1861, Confederate batteries in Charleston opened fire to bombard Ft Sumter which was occupied by Union troops. This event triggered the start of the Civil War in The United States between the Union and Confederate.

42. Postal Museum
The Postal Museum can be found at the intersection of Broad Street and Meeting Street. It is in the Post Office that is part of the Four Corners of Law. The days of operation to the Postal Museum are only Monday through Friday, so plan ahead for that.
Where the Post Office sits now, was once a police station that was destroyed in the 1886 earthquake. The Post Office was built in its place. It is fun to step back in time and really see and think about how the postal system was run. All before technology took over.
This museum takes you through the history of the postal system that served Charleston. You will see old post stamps, newspaper clippings, and many historical post office items that were used in times past. This is a small museum that is packed with a ton of information. To tour it, it only takes about 20 minutes.
43. Art Walks
The Art Walks in Charleston is free for people who want to go from different galleries around the French Quarter and surrounding area. These Art Walks only take place four times a year, on the first Friday of March, May, October, and December from 5 pm to 8 pm.
This event is organized by the Charleston Gallery Association and will feature more than 40 local art galleries. You are able to pick up a map for the Art Walks at any of the galleries. Also, you are able to find which galleries are participating in the event online.

44. Best Friend of Charleston Train Museum
In the 1820s, settlements in Charleston started to move more inland. Commerce was in a decline and merchants were looking for new ways to expand the economy. Railroads were starting to pop up in Europe and the concept came to The United States.
In 1827, Charleston merchants persuaded the state to create the “South Carolina Canal and Rail Road Company”. They were looking to connect Charleston to inland markets and canals to go between the Ashley and Savannah Rivers.
The “Best Friend of Charleston” was a train that arrived in Charleston in 1830. “Best Friend of Charleston” made its first trip on Christmas Day in 1830. It was the first steam locomotive to have regularly scheduled passenger service in The United States. The train ran along six miles of wood and metal rails.
With the help of the “Best Friend of Charleston”, the economy prospered in Charleston. The rail system exploded and there were 6 locomotives in the area within three years. Sadly, an explosion happened and destroyed the “Best Friend of Charleston”. At the museum, you will see a replica of the train that changed America.
